Field Trips at MCS

Field trips are one of the highlights of the school year! They provide students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and bring learning to life. At MCS, we believe these experiences are even more rewarding when parents partner with us.

We welcome parents who have completed the required chaperone qualifications to join us on field trips throughout the year. While transportation and venue limitations may occasionally affect participation, our goal is to include as many qualified parent volunteers as possible. This page provides everything you need to know about becoming an MCS field trip chaperone.

Before joining your child's class on a field trip, please complete these four simple steps:

✔ Complete the required background check through the MCS Front Office.

✔ Attend a one-hour MCS Chaperone Training.

✔ Sign up when your child's teacher requests parent volunteers.

✔ Enjoy a fun day of learning alongside our students!

Become an MCS Field Trip Chaperone

Step 1: Complete Your Background Check

All prospective chaperones must complete the school's volunteer screening process before serving on a field trip.

This includes:

  • Completing a background check through the MCS Front Office.
  • Providing a valid Fingerprint Clearance Card or completing the MCS Security Search, as required by the school.

Step 2: Attend Chaperone Training

All new chaperones are required to attend a one-hour training session led by a designated school administrator.

During the training, parents will learn about:

  • Student supervision
  • Safety procedures
  • Emergency protocols
  • Communication expectations
  • Field trip responsibilities

  • Thursday, August 13 | 3:15–4:15 p.m.
  • Thursday, September 17 | 3:15–4:15 p.m.

Additional training sessions will be offered throughout the school year.

Chaperone Expectations

Our chaperones play an important role in providing students with a safe and enjoyable learning experience.

Student Supervision

  • Supervise all students assigned to your group—not just your own child.
  • Remain with your assigned group at all times.
  • Maintain a supervision ratio of approximately one adult for every four to five students.
  • Report accidents, illnesses, behavioral concerns, or emergencies to the teacher or Field Trip Coordinator immediately.
  • Notify the teacher or administrator if any circumstance may affect your ability to fulfill your responsibilities.

Student Care

  • Be familiar with any allergies, medical concerns, or special needs of the students in your group.
  • Do not administer prescription or over-the-counter medications to students.
  • Treat every student with fairness, patience, and respect.

Communication

  • Carry a cell phone during the trip.
  • Exchange contact information with the Field Trip Coordinator before departure.
  • Limit personal cell phone use to field trip communication.
  • Texting while driving is strictly prohibited.

General Expectations

  • Return promptly to vehicles after each stop.
  • Inform the trip leader of any necessary stops between the school and the destination.
  • Do not purchase food, treats, or souvenirs for students unless approved by the teacher.
  • Model Christ-like behavior through your words, actions, and interactions with students and other adults.

If You Are Driving Students

If you volunteer to transport students, please note the following additional expectations:

  • Provide proof of current automobile insurance that meets MCS requirements.
  • Provide a valid driver's license prior to the trip.
  • Final driving assignments and student seating arrangements are determined by the teacher and school administration.
  • Requests for special driving accommodations should be submitted at least two weeks before the field trip.
  • Drivers and students must remain with the assigned group unless otherwise directed by the teacher or administrator.
  • Only Christian music and school-approved media may be played during travel.
  • Children under 12 years of age or weighing less than 80 pounds may not ride in the front passenger seat.

Student Expectations

Students are expected to represent MCS well during all field trips.

Students should:

  • Follow directions from teachers and chaperones.
  • Use respectful language and behavior at all times.
  • Dress appropriately for the activity and weather.
  • Keep track of their own personal belongings.
  • Remain with their assigned group throughout the trip.

The possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, illegal drugs, or other prohibited substances is strictly forbidden.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I chaperone my child's class?

Yes! We encourage parents who have completed the required background check and chaperone training to volunteer whenever possible.

Can younger or older siblings attend?

No. Siblings are generally not permitted to attend field trips. Exceptions require prior approval from both the classroom teacher and the principal.

Can my older MCS student miss school to attend a sibling's field trip?

No. Students may not miss school to attend a sibling's field trip unless specifically approved by school administration.

Will I always be assigned to my own child's group?

Not necessarily. Student groups and vehicle assignments are made by the teacher and school administration to best meet the needs of the class.
